 | For toddlers and infants, avoid having small toys that they could
choke on. A simple rule of thumb is to remember "if it fits in the opening of a roll
of toilet paper, then it's probably too small to have around.
 | Make sure toys purchased are "age-appropriate" and have
potential pieces that could break off.
 | Don't leave Christmas lights on when going to sleep our out of
the house.
 | Keep your living trees healthy and watered to prevent drying out
(a fire hazard)
 | Avoid use of candles, particularly on trees.
 | Make sure artificial trees are "fire resistant."
 | Don't "oversave" left-overs; most will be good for up
to 48 hours - then throw them away.
 | Wash your hands often when cooking or preparing foods; the more
water you use, the better!
 | Replace kitchen washcloths daily.
 | Poinsettias, if eating, may make your child a little sick to the
stomach, but are not poisonous.
 | Drive safely to Grandmas and Grandpas, and use a car seat as
recommended.
 | Be sure to take your bottles of Ipecac
and Activated Charcoal with you when you visit relatives. Remember, their house
is less likely to be "poison-proofed" like yours. Review our poison safety tips. Also, have the Poison Control phone number quickly available for wherever
you are traveling (look it up on our site).
