The Outlook for a Pediatrician Career

The ability for a Pediatrician to get a job is extremely good! In fact, predictions show a significant short-fall in medical doctors working in Primary Care (Family Practice, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics) for the upcoming decades.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics published studies regularly on the need for physicians and surgeons. According to their statistics, Pediatricians will see a 22% increase in jobs from 2008-2018 (www.bls.gov).

 Traditionally, a vast majority of Pediatricians work in an office-based, outpatient setting most of their day. As medicine has evolved over the last twenty years, the need for office-based Pediatricians will continue to be in demand, but more and more Pediatricians are "specializing" in hospital-based care of infants, children and adolescents as either neonatologists (in a NICU setting) or hospitalist (taking care of hospitalized pediatric patients only). As more and more hospitals employ such Pediatricians, the demand for their services will remain high.
Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners can also "specialize" and provide exclusive care for infants and children - with much less time and money invested in education - learn more!
So the outlook is great if you are interested in a career as a Pediatrician.
